History of Union Baptist Church of Rio Vista
In 1914, The American Baptist Publication Society sent Dr. W. E. Story, as Captain of the cruser "OSCEOLA," to the Sacramento River area to do Missionary work. His assistant, Ralph Rowe, was attending The Baptist Divinity School at Berkeley and spent the weekends holding services with Dr Story. After holding services up and down the river, one day they docked at Rio Vista, and after a warm reception, it was not long before they held evening services in the old Masonic hall.
On July 2, 1915 The Rio Vista Union Baptist Church was organized as a union of several denominations. The first church building was dedicated Easter Sunday, April 20, 1919. The church expanded and grew over the years, and eventually needed a new site. In 1959, after Sunday School attendance topped 300, the members researched a new location. In 1961, UBC purchased new property, and construction began Nov 12, 1963. The new building was dedicated on Sept 27, 1964. The organ was dedicated at a special concert Oct 18, 1964. A little over 10 years later, the church completely owned the buildings it now used.
